My Linux Setup in August 2025

This is a snapshot of my Linux setup in August 2025. It brings together the tools I used for reading papers, writing, development, and everyday tasks. I’ve grouped them by purpose so it is easier to find the parts relevant to your own setup.
Writing and research
- Literature and references: Zotero, for collecting papers and managing references.
- Typesetting: LaTeX and Typst.
- Computational documents: Quarto, which brings prose, code, and its results into one document.
- PDF reading: zathura.
- Spelling and grammar: Grammarly, LanguageTool, and Harper.
- Blog: Hugo.
Development and the terminal
- Terminal emulators: Ghostty and kitty.
- Shell prompt: Starship.
- Editors: Helix in the terminal and Zed Preview as a graphical editor.
- Terminal sessions: Zellij.
- Git interface: lazygit.
- File management: Yazi.
Zellij stood out because I found it easy to use. It organises terminal work into panes and tabs, so several tasks can share one window.
Local language models
My local language-model tools were llama.cpp, llama-swap, and Open WebUI. They serve different roles: llama.cpp runs models, llama-swap switches between model servers on demand, and Open WebUI provides a browser interface for interacting with them.
Desktop and system management
- Operating system: EndeavourOS.
- Window management: Hyprland.
- Application launcher: wofi.
- Backups: Vorta, a graphical interface for BorgBackup.
- VPN: Mullvad.
Communication and everyday tasks
- Web browser: Firefox Developer Edition.
- Email: Thunderbird.
- Messaging: Signal; Halloy for IRC.
- Media: mpv and YouTube Music.
- To-do notes: Planify.
- Expense tracking: Bagels, a terminal application.
This covers the main applications rather than every installed package. My custom configurations are not included here.
